The William W. Backus Hospital is a level III trauma center, and is proud to serve our community and region as the only trauma center in Eastern CT. Located in the city of Norwich, Backus Hospital serves as the East Region base for Life Star, our critical care helicopter service. Trauma leadership is comprised of Renee Malaro, Trauma Program Manager, and Dr. Gary Kaml, Trauma Medical Director. The hospital was named one of America’s 250 Best Hospitals, placing it in the top 5% of hospitals in the country and an overall leader in clinical excellence according to Healthgrades. Backus Hospital was also recognized by Healthgrades as recipient of Pulmonary Care, Stroke Care, and Critical Care Excellence Awards, placing the hospital in the Top 10% of the nation.
