Dr. Smoot is a highly experienced general surgeon specializing in trauma, critical care & acute care surgery. With over a decade of surgical expertise, he currently practices at the Surgical Institute of South Dakota, where he provides comprehensive surgical care in a 700-bed hospital setting. Dr. Smoot has held leadership roles throughout his career, serving as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Trauma at Spearfish Regional Hospital ensuring excellence in rural surgical care and trauma response. Previously, he was an attending surgeon at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, an ACS-verified Level 1 Trauma Center, where he played a key role in trauma and acute care surgery. His dedication to education earned him the Surgical Teacher of the Year Award in 2014. Dr. Smoot remains dedicated to providing high-quality surgical care and mentoring the next generation of surgeons. Currently, he is the SD ACS COT vice chair.
